For these two systems to work together, a new technology called the Engine API is required. This API ensures efficient cooperation between the execution and consensus layers. Without it, the network could fracture.

Existing decentralized applications (DApps) can still function almost identically. They only require minimal updates. The barrier to entry for developers is lower than you might think.

Solving Scalability and Gas Fees

The Merge will not instantly solve Ethereum’s scalability problems. It does not fix everything overnight. However, it clears the path for Sharding. Sharding will improve data availability and bandwidth. It is a necessary foundation for the future.

If you need immediate scaling and want to save on gas fees, you will likely look to Rollups or Layer-2 solutions. These technologies sit on top of the main chain to process transactions faster and cheaper.

Gas is the metric for computational effort. Every Ethereum transaction consumes resources. Each one requires a gas fee. By improving efficiency and paving the way for sharding, the Merge aims to make these fees more manageable. It is a step toward a more usable network for everyday users.

When Will the Mainnet Launch?

This latest test run could be the final one. If everything goes smoothly, the mainnet could launch in early August. But caution is warranted.

The Ethereum team has delayed the Merge multiple times. They have postponed the “Difficulty Bomb” — the mechanism that forces the network to switch consensus — six times since 2017. The target was originally June 2022. That date has since been pushed back by two to three months.

Tim Beiko, a key Ethereum developer, noted on Twitter that they agreed to delay the bomb to verify all numbers for plausibility. They are aiming for a delay of about two months. The goal is to have the upgrade live by the end of June.

Doubts remain. Can they hit the new deadline? It is unclear.

Whether the Merge happens in June, July, or August, the shift is inevitable. The cryptocurrency market evolves rapidly. New developments are unavoidable.
