Friday didn’t just end the Summer Game Fest 2026. It exploded.

Square Enix pulled the curtain back on Final Fantasy VII: Revelation, the third and final entry in the remake trilogy. No more teasers. No vague hints. They showed the trailer, dropped some gameplay footage, and told us it lands in the spring of next year.

We can finally rest easy. Or at least stop holding our breath.

Revelation picks up the thread dropped by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. All your favorites are back—Barret, Aerith, Tifa, the usual crew—ready to tie up the loose ends that the remake series spent two games fraying. This time around, it wraps it up.

The trailer paints a bleak picture. Sephiroth is powerful. Like, really powerful. It’s just Cloud and the team standing between him and whatever nightmare he’s planning. And helpfully, Vincent Valentine joins the fray. We barely got a whiff of him in the previous installment, but he’s locked in now.

If you like pain, there’s that too. The Weapons are coming back—Ruby, Emerald, Ultimate. Big monsters. Tough fights.

One nice touch: on-the-fly character swapping is back. Why did they ever mess with the combat system in Rebirth? Sometimes the classic approach just works better.

They also tossed in a new mechanic called the Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear—or FITS for short. Think of it as battle cosplay with a stat boost. You swap looks, you swap movesets, you get buffs. Customization meets utility.

This whole saga started back in 2020. A bold re-imagining of a 1997 classic. Over three games, they expanded the world, polished the combat, and bloated the playtime significantly. Was it necessary? Maybe not. Was it fun? Mostly.

Final Fantasy VII: Revelation launches in 2027. It’ll be everywhere: PC, PS5, Xbox, and even the rumored Nintendo Switch 2.

By then, the dust might finally settle. Or it might just kick up again. Only time will tell.
