Google is stealing all the oxygen lately. I/O week. AI breakthroughs. Pixel things. It feels like Apple forgot it exists, and let’s be honest, it’s tough being the quiet partner at the moment. 🙄

We felt sorry for the iOS crowd. Or maybe just curious about T-Mobile’s aggressive pricing strategy. So we dug into the carrier deals. Turns out the new iPhones are practically free. Again.

The specifics matter

T-Mobile rolled out offers for the iPhone 17 lineup this week. The catches? You know there are always catches. Here is what is actually on the table:

  • iPhone 17e: You get it free if you switch carriers and port your number. Works on most plans. No trade-in needed for this specific tier, just loyalty (or migration).
  • iPhone 17: Requires a switch AND a trade-in of an eligible phone. You need to be on an Experience More or Experience Beyond plan.
  • iPhone 17 Pro: Just needs a trade-in. Condition doesn’t even matter. Works on the Experience Beyond plan.

Is it truly free? No. It never is.

The “free” part is 24 months of bill credits. You finance the phone, they refund it. Slowly.

You still owe the carrier the money. Every month. If you leave before those credits are exhausted, you get hammered with early termination fees. Standard carrier logic.

Also, don’t forget taxes. And that $35 activation fee. T-Mobile isn’t losing money on hardware. They are banking on your future contracts.

Is a free phone worth two years of service dependency? Probably, if you were planning to buy the phone anyway. Just read the fine print before you sign up.

The spotlights on Android can’t stay lit forever.
