Walmart is significantly expanding its drone delivery service in partnership with Wing, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet. The rollout will reach an additional 150 stores across the U.S., bringing the total number of operational drone delivery locations to 270. This expansion will serve roughly 40 million Americans—approximately 10% of the U.S. population—making it the largest residential drone delivery service in the country.

Key Expansion Details

The service, initially tested in 2023, will expand beyond existing hubs in Dallas-Forth Worth and Atlanta. Over the next two years, Walmart plans to launch drone delivery in major metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Miami.

This is a notable acceleration of drone delivery capabilities for a major retailer. According to Walmart, over 150,000 successful drone deliveries have already been completed. This growth suggests growing consumer demand for faster, more convenient delivery options.

Why This Matters

Walmart’s aggressive push into drone delivery isn’t simply about speed; it’s about reshaping retail logistics. Traditional last-mile delivery is expensive and often inefficient. Drones offer a way to bypass traffic, reduce labor costs, and provide faster service for time-sensitive items.

The company’s expansion to five states earlier in 2024—including Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa—demonstrates its commitment to scaling the technology. The service is particularly valuable for urgent purchases, such as forgotten ingredients for dinner or essential electronics.

The Future of Convenience

Walmart leadership frames this as a key step in the future of retail fulfillment. Senior Vice President Greg Cathey states that the high adoption rates confirm drone delivery is becoming “the future of convenience.” This indicates that Walmart sees drone delivery as a long-term competitive advantage, likely to be replicated by other major retailers in the coming years.

The rapid expansion of this service signals a shift in how goods will be transported directly to consumers, with drones playing a growing role in the logistics landscape.
