The internet is undergoing a fundamental shift: artificial intelligence (AI) bots are rapidly increasing in number, and will likely outnumber human users online by 2027. This prediction comes from Matthew Prince, CEO of Cloudflare, a major internet infrastructure company, following observations of explosive growth in AI-driven web traffic over the past six months.
The Rise of Generative AI and Data Demand
The surge in popularity of AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini is driving this trend. These tools require massive amounts of data to function, leading to an “insatiable need” for web scraping and analysis.
Prince estimates that AI bots now generate a significant portion of all internet traffic. Unlike human browsing patterns, AI agents often visit thousands of times more websites while completing even simple tasks —like researching a product or planning a trip. This behavior is placing unprecedented strain on web servers, security systems, and the underlying infrastructure.
Implications for the Internet’s Future
The implications are substantial. As automated traffic increases, so does the risk of malicious activity. More than half of all current web traffic is already automated, with a rising proportion attributed to “bad bots” used for spam, DDoS attacks, and other cybercrimes.
The growth in “agentic AI”—where bots operate autonomously—will further amplify these effects. To accommodate this escalating demand, new technologies and infrastructure upgrades will be essential.
The current trend suggests that internet traffic will continue to accelerate, with no foreseeable slowdown. The question is not whether AI will dominate online activity, but how the web will adapt to this reality.
