Energizer, known for its long-lasting batteries, has entered the laptop market with three new models designed to stay powered for exceptionally long periods. The flagship, the Energizer EnergyBook Pro Ultra, boasts a massive 192Wh battery capable of delivering up to seven days of standby time or 28 hours of office use. While this is impressive, it also means the device is likely banned from most flights due to exceeding Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) battery size limits.
The Battery Problem: Why Flights Are Off-Limits
The FAA restricts laptop batteries to 100Wh for standard use, with limited exceptions for larger batteries (101–160Wh) that require airline approval. The Pro Ultra’s 192Wh battery significantly surpasses both thresholds, making it almost certain to be prohibited from checked baggage. Passengers would have to carry the laptop in the cabin, but even then, airline policies may vary.
This limitation appears to be a practical reason why other laptop manufacturers haven’t pursued similarly oversized batteries.
Beyond Battery Life: Specs and Availability
The EnergyBook Pro Ultra features an AMD Ryzen 5 processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, a 512GB SSD, and an 18-inch 1080p display. The other models, the EnergyBook Pro 15 and EnergyBook Pro XL 18.5, also offer extended battery life, though exact specifications are not yet public.
The Pro 15 and XL will release on October 15. However, the Ultra is still undergoing certification testing, with no firm release date in sight.
Why This Matters: The Trade-off Between Portability and Power
The appeal of these laptops is clear: users who prioritize all-day, uninterrupted computing without needing to search for outlets. As Josh Goldman, CNET’s managing editor, notes, the ability to work for over 24 hours on a single charge—especially with an 18-inch screen—is a major selling point.
However, the battery size raises a critical question: How much convenience are consumers willing to trade for the restriction of air travel? For many, this may be a deal-breaker, but others may find the extended battery life worth the limitation.
The Energizer laptops represent a new extreme in portable power. While they won’t be flying with you anytime soon, they may just redefine what it means to stay connected on the ground.
