Saudi Aramco’s digital services arm, Aramco Digital, is deploying a nationwide industrial communications network operating on the 450 MHz band. This marks a significant step towards enhanced connectivity for critical infrastructure and the rapid expansion of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications across Saudi Arabia. The network will initially cover over 50 industrial zones, providing secure, reliable connectivity independent of commercial telecom networks.

Why This Matters: Reliability and Independence

The creation of this dedicated network is driven by the unique demands of industrial operations. Unlike standard cellular networks, the 450 MHz band offers superior range and penetration, making it ideal for automation, real-time monitoring, and secure communications in harsh environments. Critical sectors such as energy, utilities, and manufacturing require connectivity that cannot be compromised; Aramco’s solution addresses this need directly.

Core Features and Applications

The network will support a portfolio of 450 MHz-based industrial digital solutions including:

  • Smart radios with integrated AI: Enabling real-time data processing and enhanced sensing.
  • Extended battery life: Ensuring long-term operation in remote or hard-to-reach locations.
  • IIoT applications: Including asset monitoring, fleet tracking, environmental sensing, and smart surveillance.

These capabilities will enable businesses to optimize operations, improve safety, and enhance efficiency across their facilities.

Regulatory and Technological Foundations

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) granted Aramco a specialized license in 2024 to operate this private network. The 450 MHz spectrum (LTE Band 72) offers advantages over higher frequencies, requiring fewer base stations for wide-area coverage. This reduces infrastructure costs while ensuring deep signal penetration, even indoors and underground.

Strategic Collaboration with Qualcomm

Aramco Digital has partnered with Qualcomm Technologies to develop and deploy advanced edge AI industrial IoT technologies. This collaboration leverages Qualcomm’s expertise in on-device AI, wireless connectivity, and low-power computing. The partnership will bring solutions like worker assistants, predictive maintenance systems, and visual anomaly detection to the market. The companies have already announced the world’s first 5G processors with native support for the 450 MHz spectrum, further accelerating innovation in this space.

“This network is a foundational element in Saudi Arabia’s industrial transformation, providing a secure and reliable backbone for the next generation of smart infrastructure.”

The nationwide rollout follows initial operational deployments in 2025, demonstrating the network’s readiness for high-density, demanding environments. This strategic investment in industrial connectivity positions Saudi Arabia as a leader in Industry 4.0, driving innovation and economic growth.
