The Trump administration has ordered the construction of a new artificial intelligence (AI) platform designed to accelerate scientific discovery by leveraging vast troves of government-held data. The initiative, dubbed the “Genesis Mission,” aims to create an integrated AI system capable of training foundation models and automating research workflows across multiple scientific disciplines.
Harnessing Federal Datasets for AI Training
At the core of this project is the intention to utilize decades’ worth of federally funded scientific datasets – considered the world’s largest collection of its kind. The goal is not merely to analyze existing data but to build AI agents that can independently test hypotheses, refine experiments, and dramatically shorten the time required for breakthroughs. According to Michael Kratsios, director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, the platform will initially focus on automating experiments in fields like protein folding and fusion plasma dynamics.

The Genesis Mission will initially rely on existing supercomputing resources within the U.S.’s 17 national laboratories. However, the long-term plan includes building additional computing infrastructure, though funding details remain unspecified. Major technology companies – Nvidia, AMD, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Dell – have already committed to establishing facilities within these labs. While some data will be shared with private AI firms, the White House assures that sensitive national security information will be withheld.
